Kavita Raut - From fetching water, cleaning the cowshed to winning medals in the Asian Games.
Kavita Raut was another Indian girl, in the recent Asian Games in Guangzhour to bring glory to India in the Asian Games.

She belongs to a tribal family and she was born on fifth May 1985 in Sawarpada, at a remote village near Harsul, Nashik in Maharashtra state, India. At present she told to be working in an Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC).
When Kavita was young, it is interesting to find that she used to fetch water in her formative years. This conditioning could have given a good physical and mental preparation which may have led Kavita to win a silver medal in Guangzhou, China. This story is similar to Haile Gabreselassie who have to go with his mother to fetch water. The distance they had to travel was very long.

Recently, she remarked, “Now my parents, as also my brothers, are very proud of me,”., Kavita’s mother told that Kavita seemed to have fast in doing things and Kavita’s attitude towards life was good as she had the stamina to fetch water from well and get woods from the forest. She did it with ease, without any difficulty. The mother now feels that Kavita has set a new example to young girls at the village.
Kavita’s mother told that after the Asian Games, life will be as usual as Kavita still has to work at the cowshed and do other chores. The mother also told that Kavita will lead a normal of village work once she is back at the village.
Ramdas, Kavita’s father was overjoyed and overwhelmed when he saw Kavita’s performance in the television. It was also found that the parents have not seen their child for more than two years. The fact that Kavita has won silver in 10000m and bronze in 5000 has made the parents to think that the effort put in was worth it after all.

Kavita started running 1500m and 3000m from 2001. She became very appreciative towards her coach, Vijender Singh, who became responsible for helping her to choose what she was good for by switching her from 1500m and 3000m to 10000m that saw her winning a historic bronze medal in the Commonwealth Games in Delhi a couple of months ago.
Earlier on, Kavita’s personal best was 16:05.90 for 5000m, which she achieved while winning a bronze on November 2009 during the 18th Asian athletics championships held at Guangzhou, China. In 50th National Open athletic meet held at Kochi, she improved the previous meet record held by Preeja Sreedharan by clocking 32:41.31 in the 10000m event.
In the recent 2010 Commonwealth Games held at New Delhi on 8 October, Kavita did a timing of 33:05.28, which was the first individual track medal by an Indian athlete at the Commonwealth Games in more than 50 years. Only Milkha Singh was the only one who could achieve the 440 yards and achieved gold at the 1958 Cardiff Commonwealth Games.
Kavita Raut, hence has becomebecame the first individual women to win the track medal ever by an Indian women athlete in the history of Commonwealth Games.
An interesting point to note is that Kavita is still holding the current Indian National record for 10 km run timing on the road which is 34min 32sec, which was set at the Sunfeast World 10K in Bangalore.
As for this year, within few months, Kavita has improved tremendously in both 5000m and 10000m. Her journey from Indian Inter-State to Commonwealth Track and Field Championships to Asian Games was phenomenal.
