Hong Kong Marathon (20/02/2011) - Ashley Liew and Lim Thow Wee

Hong Kong Marathon 2011

Picture 1 - Will be with Ashley in Hong Kong tomorrow around night time. In 1990, I did 2hr 31min coming in 5th position in Hong Marathon, which was a flat course route.

I remember running few years back in Hong Kong running the Standard Chartered Marathon race. As usual, the Hong Kong officials were very warm in extending their friendship. They even asked me to communicate with them once we are back in Singapore. What ever we needed for the race, they did their best to help. They organised for us the route orientation for the Asian Marathon Championships which was included in this race. I met a Botswana runner who saw the route and became worried about the race. He was a 2hr 18min man for the marathon. There was also a Philippines runner who could do a sub 2hr 30min in the bus of the route orientation transport.

During the race, I had to negotiate about 10 up and down highways. Earlier, I was told that there was only one or two hills to negotiate. The weather for the race was fine, except for the hills. One should train for this type of hills. At the half-way point I did 1hr 22min. However, I felt all my glycogen stores in my hand and leg muscles were gone. The last 10km was unbearable such that I had to jog and walk and finally survived the course doing a time of 3hr 01min. I realised that I should have been told about the course so that I could have tailored my running training properly. I could have been more physically and mentally prepared for the race. Hence, I hope to wish all the best to everyone running in the race.

Ashley Liew is there in Hong Kong right now. He will be joined by me and Lim Thow Wee. I am flying tomorrow to Hong Kong to see the race of Ashley and Lim Thow Wee. Ashley is in good condition to do a time between 2hr 42min and 2hr 45min. As Lim Thow Wee is still in Singapore, I decided to interview him on his preparation on Hong Kong Marathon 2011.

An Interview With Lim Thow Wee

How is your preparation for the race?
I did a lot of easy runs with no tempo or workouts.

What is your target for the race which is coming up?
I am aiming for 3hr or 2hr 59min

What are you going to do to counter the hilly terrain?
I am not really prepared to counter the hilly terrain. I am aiming for 4min 15 sec all the way. I will have to adjust according to the uphills and downhills, maybe 4min 05sec for downhills and 4min 25sec for uphills.

Why was there no tempo runs or any form of workouts in your training?
Right now I have just landed in a new job. I did not have time to do any workout except long runs.

How many very long runs have you done per week?
About 3 times of slightly more than 20kim per run per week. I did somewhere around 80 to 90km for weekly mileage runs.

Any reviews you read so far?
Heard from the blog that you have written and realised about the difficulties that I have to go through. I have to thank you for letting me know of what is in store for me. Am trying to read on other reviews from other blogs.

Anyone supporting you during the race?
My wife will be coming down support.
