US airport screener admits stealing from travellers

NEWARK - A SENIOR transportation security officer at Newark Liberty Airport in New Jersey has admitted that he and his supervisor regularly stole money from travellers' bags during security screenings.

Transportation Security Administration officer Al Raimi pleaded guilty on Thursday in Newark federal court to theft by a government officer.

Federal prosecutors say the 29-year-old Raimi stole between US$10,000 (S$12,800) and US$30,000 cash over nearly a year from travellers passing through his checkpoint.
He gave a cut of the cash to his supervisor, Michael Arato, who pleaded guilty to related charges this month.

Raimi could face up to 10 years in prison at his June 6 sentencing.

Separately, two TSA agents at a New York City airport were arrested this month on charges of stealing US$40,000 from passengers' luggage. --AP
