Hackers have played inside the NASDAQ computer system.
So, what does that mean?
Answer: 80% of all stock market buys and sells are done be remote computers.
They are programed to buy and sell instantly, many times per minute in some cases. Your investment with a stock brokerage is managed, not by men, but by computers.
If hackers with evil intentions got into the system of the stock exchanges, they could wipe out the stock market, or they could cause a sell off that would cause all other computer systems to play follow-the-leader.
It is also possible that a total crash could happen in minutes if the hackers also voided the automatic hold on dropping prices. All humans watch for it red lights or pop ups to tell them when the market is bombing too fast. They then push the "stop" button, and the market closes for the day. If the pop up box is hacked, Aloha Wall Street.
Impossible, you think?
Well, there is one way to find out-- invest in the stock market and wait and see.
