Today, 19th of December 2010, the winners of the top 10 placing for the Singapore Standard Chartered Marathon 2010 and I went out for a celebration with them. The Hwa Chong boys, current and old boys, also joined us for a night out. We discussed on several things and one of it that we covered was on Ashley's picture in Sunday Times, 19th December, 2010.

During the night out, we were discussing about the training and the marathon itself. Most of our group members were discussing that they were having cramps. I told them that it is better to negotiate a hill earlier of the distance rather than later part of the run during a marathon. At the later stages, the muscles of the leg will be going through glycogen (carbohydrate) depletion. Hence, muscle fatigue will be taking place. Worse still, that it the time when the sun is up and dehydration will set in and the core temperature will be higher.

Also, from the discussion, I found that the winding downhill, after the steep upslope, after the 37km must have given alot of stress to muscles because of eccentric loading. A lot of stress on the back of the thigh makes the muscles to fatigue even more. From my experience, it is easier to get cramps when running downhills rather than uphill.

Dr Ben Tan shared with us on training method of the new era. He explained to us on this as how the world marathon timing is getting faster. He compared on past training methods with the new training methods. I found this to be true, after listening to him.
