BACH FOR THE WEIRD

The audience was made up of mostly head banging rock music freaks. 

Virgil Fox, though he was a 24 karat nut case, learned how to turn on the weirdos with Bach. This proves that rock music does NOT rule. Classical music, when presented with force, will still talk to anyone who will listen. But, no composer talked to the soul like JS Bach.


It is believed, in the organ world, that Virgil Fox was bordering on mad. I do not agree, but he WAS eccentric and very convinced he was the best. 

A friend of mine knew he was practicing for a performance on his college campus. My friend, an organ musician himself, went to the hall and found a door open. He went in and quietly sat down. Virgil Fox, after a short while, stopped and looked into the blackness of the auditorium. He called out, "Is someone there?" My friend identified himself and said he wanted to hear Fox in practice to learn his method. Virgil Fox said, "Alright, you can stay, but lock all the doors please." And, away he went.

Fox was possibly the best in his era. He played with FORCE, as any German would have during Bach's era. Other musicians did not like that. It may sound pretty to play Bach politely, but I do not believe it replicates the soul of JS Bach to hold back.

Really, Bach should never be played on an organ with anything less than 32 foot bass pipes. Bach calls for power, enough to rattle your gizzard.
