JAKARTA - PRESIDENT Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono promised on Monday a fair distribution of income despite the government's pro-growth stance in its economic development policy.
In his speech at a ceremony to mark the opening of the 2011 stock trading, Mr Yudhoyono said that 'equity' would remain the basic principle in the government's long-term economic policy.
'It's not right if economic growth is solely measured by GDP and per capita income,' he said.
'Concentration of wealth needs to spread to small- and medium-sized enterprises, cooperatives and even the outermost islands,' he added.
A fair distribution of income to the people and equal growth opportunity in the country's provinces will remain a priority although the government will continue to maintain high growth in economic development.
The President also cited the importance of keeping economic growth in balance between big cities and small and isolated ones as they are a key factor to spur faster economic expansion in the country. -- THE JAKARTA POST/ANN
