BEIJING - UP TO 1,200 rural patients in China will receive free cataract removal operations sponsored by the All-China Federation of Returned Overseas Chinese, according to an official with the federation.
Qiao Wei, vice-chairman of the federation, said the program, which seeks to help poor patients have their eyesight restored, was part of its broader efforts to promote health awareness in rural regions of China.
Rural patients in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, and provinces of Anhui, Henan and Hubei, will benefit from the program this year, he said.
Additionally, the federation will provide lectures and set up two to three training centers on ophthalmology later in the year.
So far, 667 patients in Tibet autonomous region, and the provinces of Gansu, Yunnan and Hubei, have benefited from cataract surgery as a result of the program since it was launched by the federation in 2005. -- CHINA DAILY/ANN
