Laguna Loire, an ex-soldier from Galbadia, winds up in the care of an innkeeper, Raine, in the small town of Winhill. Injured and oblivious to his surroundings, Raine nurses Laguna back to health.
Laguna returns to full strength soon, and carries out his duties protecting Winhill, travelling about here and there. At first, Laguna and Raine share an odd - even strained - relationship, mostly over the way Raine's adopted daughter, Ellone, is brought up. Laguna spoils her, while Raine wants her to be an adult too fast. Ellone is really the key to the relationship between Laguna and Raine, and Elle (as Laguna calls her) ends up bringing Laguna and Raine closer together.
Their feelings for one another develope with time, and eventually, Laguna proposes marriage to Raine. Soon after this happens, however, Ellone is kidnapped. Laguna, determined to get his favorite little girl back, journeys out to get Ellone back.
Raine, alone in Winhill, gives birth to a son (Squall Leonhart), and dies shortly after. Laguna never knew of the birth of his own son until he meets Squall 17 years later.
At the end of Final Fantasy VIII, we see Laguna visiting the grave of his late wife. All those years gone, and never a chance to say goodbye...
