YANGON - MEDIA in Myanmar are reporting that tourists who buy ivory souvenirs risk having them confiscated as part of a crackdown on the illegal ivory trade.
Forestry officials quoted in the 7-Day News Journal said that authorities are aware that handicraft shops in Yangon and Mandalay openly sell ivory goods, despite laws aimed at protecting elephants.
Friday's report said that officials will step up enforcement of laws ivory sales.
It cited a wildlife protection law that lists elephants as endangered species and carries a seven-year prison sentence for people who kill or hunt the animals or sell their parts.
The report said foreigners who buy ivory souvenirs would have them confiscated. -- AP
